The Catholic wedding
Italy is home to some of the most beautiful churches in the world. Ancient, Medieval, Baroque or modern: they all host an unparalleled artistic and cultural heritage. To get married in an Italian church means to celebrate a religious rite, namely Catholic. The minister of the union is the parish priest of the church, or, in some cases, a priest chosen by the bride and groom. A Catholic wedding can also be legally binding, and, in this case, it is a holy marriage with civil recognition.
Documents necessary for the Catholic rite
If you do choose to give your Catholic rite civil recognition, then, six months prior to your wedding day, you must go to the Municipality of your city of residence and request the publication of the banns. You will also have to nominate two witnesses of age, one per spouse, who, at the end of the ceremony, will sign your documents.
Two months ahead of your big day, you must present all the documentation to the Curia of your dioceses, in order to apply for registration. Finally – in preparation for the rite – you must follow a pre-nuptial course at your parish.
Traditional Catholic Rite
The religious ceremony can be officiated in Italian, or, in the presence of an interpreter, even in other languages.
The traditional liturgical rite can be elevated by the presence of music played by an organ and violins. A detailed floral arrangement will give your ceremony an extra touch of class and will “personalize” the church’s architectural features and spaces.
